Chimney fire on Bay Street
Boothbay Harbor and Boothbay fire deparments responded to a chimney fire at 97 Bay Street in Boothbay Harbor at 3:35 p.m. on August 23.
The homeowner, Fred Daniels, a summer resident from Florida, said it felt cooler in the morning so he lit the woodstove. Hours later he saw a spark and smelled smoke. He made an emergency call and within minutes five fire trucks arrived at the scene.
“When I got in there, there was active fire right down to the flue in the woodstove,” said Boothbay Harbor Fire Chief Nick Upham.
Upham said he inspected the first and second floors with a thermal imaging camera, while fire crews cleaned out of the debris built up in the chimney.
Daniels said his house is 102 years old and it has the potential to burst into flames under the threat of an open fire.
“You don't mess with a house like that when you got sparks,” Daniels said.
Fire crews cleaned up and left the scene at approxamately 4:15 p.m.
