BRWD works to get new debt limit approved by legislature
On March 4, State Rep. and BRWD trustee Holly Stover presented LD 293 (An Act to Eliminate the Debt Limit of the Boothbay Region Water District) before the Maine State Committee on Energy, Utilities and Technology. Testimony was provided by General Manager Weston Alley.
The purpose of the bill is to ensure the district can borrow up to $19 million, which was approved by local voters in 2023. The district’s previous debt limit was $12 million.
During a March 11 trustees' meeting, Stover reported that upon speaking with house chair Rep. Melanie Sachs about the process, Sachs didn’t “foresee any problems with it.” Alley will be going to Augusta for a legislative work session this month.
In other business, Jim Lord of Dirigo Engineering delivered plans for the district’s filter waste recycling project. He is also working on concepts for the Squirrel Island Village Corporation water main replacement project. One plan outlines the work that would be needed to make it a year-round main, including burying the pipe in various locations and adjusting pipe size. Lord will continue to work on this over the coming months.
