Boothbay: 'It's time to get involved'
Several months ago, Audrey Miller of Cottage Connection in Boothbay proposed an economic opportunity for the Boothbay region: host an Emmy nominated travel show on PBS called “Getting Away Together” to feature the Boothbay region as the premier New England getaway.
After seeing the success that “Getting Away Together” has brought to other towns across America, Miller said she wanted to get the peninsula involved in making the the hit show a reality.
Naturally, people had questions. A TV show? How will that help us? How much will it cost the town?
To book the film crew for September 2013, $55,000 needs to be raised.
“If everbody in town could chip in $1, then we will have $50,000 in no time,” Miller said. “It's time to get involved.”
When people learned of how the show would promote the area for the next several years, Miller said local business owners and community members were quick to support the cause. On July 24, the Boothbay Board of Selectmen pledged $2,000 toward the project.
The Getting Away Together Boothbay Fundraising Committee will soon be hitting the streets, placing donation cans branded with the orange and blue insiginia at local businesses.
While support is growing daily, Miller said other efforts are in place, so be on the look out for possible restaurant promotions, specialty hats and even a special surprise from local musician Douglas Gimbel.
“We all agree that it is important for the whole community, to know about it and support it.” Miller said.
