Seahawks rise to 10-0 win after two losses
It was a bumpy take-off, but the Seahawks baseball team nipped an early season rut in the bud with a 10-0 win against Hall-Dale April 28. The win puts the team at 1-2 after losing by nine runs to Monmouth and a mercy ending to Winthrop.
April 28, Boothbay Harbor beat Hall-Dale 10-0 with a mercy rule-ending. The Seahawks started strong with two first-inning runs from a home run hit by senior Sam Markowitz. It was his first career home run.
“I've been struggling a little bit getting under the ball the past few games. So, I was just trying to think, 'Get on top of it, hit it on the line,'" he said. “I didn't even swing too hard. So, it felt great going off the bat.”
Markowitz lobbed the hit past right center field, which brought Liam Jacobs around the bases from first. The Seahawks followed up with five runs in the third and four in the fourth. The game ended at the bottom of the fifth.
Markowitz overall scored two runs, had three hits and four RBIs. Les White scored two runs and had a hit, Aidric Canada scored once and got a hit, and Casey Phelps and Shawn Gamage each scored a run.
However, Jacobs was the MVP as he led the Seahawks with three runs, three hits and two RBIs. He also pitched the entire game, striking out 13 Bulldogs, and allowing one walk but not a single hit.
“We haven't had someone that pitched like that (in a while). “I mean, they weren't even close to hitting the ball,” Crocker said, adding, it was the first no-hitter win he could remember in his tenure. “With a performance like that, we can win a lot of games.”
The Seahawks had nine earned runs, three walks and struck out seven times. Boothbay left the game with no errors and Hall-Dale had two.
April 25, the Seahawks took an 11-2 home loss to Monmouth Academy. Jacobs and Phelps each had one hit and a RBI for Boothbay, and Canada and Markowitz each scored a run. Monmouth had eight hits.
By the end of the first inning, the Seahawks and the Mustangs were tied 1-1. However, Monmouth quickly took the lead, getting three runs in the second inning, five in the fifth, and another in the sixth. Boothbay responded with a run in the fifth inning, and Monmouth got one final run in the seventh.
Canada, Phelps, Tyson French, and White pitched for the Seahawks, collectively striking out 12 Mustangs and allowing seven walks, eight hits and six earned runs. Boothbay had six walks, one earned run and struck out nine times. Boothbay had three errors and Monmouth had one.
April 23, Boothbay had a rough season opener at Winthrop, a 10-0 mercy-rule loss.
Markowitz had the sole hit for the Seahawks and Winthrop had seven. Winthrop scored three runs in the second inning, five in the fourth and two in the fifth. Boothbay had six errors and Winthrop had none.
Jacobs and Gamage took the mound for Boothbay. Combined, they pitched four strikeouts and allowed seven hits, four earned runs and seven walks. Boothbay had two walks and struck out nine times.
The Seahawks' next game is April 30 at Mountain Valley, which Crocker said he felt hopeful about after the win. “If we can get some timely hitting again, and we can get the guys swinging the bats better, then ... I think we could turn our season around really quickly.”
