Author Susan Schadler to host book reading at Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library
Susan Schadler will host a reading of her new children's book, “Come Walk in the Fynbos With Me,” at 11:15 a.m. Friday, July 6 at Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library. Fynbos, meaning fine-leafed bush in Afrikaans, refers to the small belt of natural shrubland in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa. In a journey that resembles Schadler’s own ventures into the Fynbos, the book follows a child and adult who set off to walk in what they believe to be a dull scrubland, only to discover the variety of flora the area hosts and the creatures that help sustain the environment.
Discussing her vision for the book’s effect on readers, Schadler said, “I want children and readers to feel the experience of walking in this remote wildflower kingdom, a place few will visit but, through this book, many may grow to love.”
Schadler picked local artists John and Lynne Seitzer of Joy to the Wind Gallery for illustrations to capture “the exotic, yet understated, beauty of the fynbos” and transport readers to another world. For Schadler, the choice of the Seitzers for the task was obvious. The Seitzers spent nearly all the their time in South Africa exploring the fynbos and taking pictures they brought back to their Boothbay Harbor studio. “The results of their work are splendid. No matter how many times I look at the illustrations I feel that same surge of excitement that I have when I set out on a walk in the fynbos," Schadler said.
After the reading, Schadler will lead the children and other guests up to the library’s second floor where the Seitzers’ art will be displayed. John Seitzer will answer any questions. Copies of the book will be available to buy.
The illustrations will remain there for viewing throughout July. Another reception will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. July 20. It will focus on viewing the art. Refreshments will be served and copies of the book will again be available to buy.
