Add patience to your dump run
If you’re heading to the dump over the next couple of months, be sure to toss in some patience with your regular load.
The Boothbay Region Refuse Disposal District will be replacing the existing recycling building with a new one. Demolition and construction will coincide with daily operations. During construction, the usual entrance to the dump will not be accessible and two-way traffic will need to negotiate the current dump exit.
Thursday, Sept. 26 will be the last day the current recycling center will be open. The building will then be emptied and prepared for demolition, which will begin on October 1. The metal structure will be moved to the scrap metal pile for recycling.
Concrete work is scheduled to begin on October 14. By the first week of November, installation of the new recycling building should begin. Total construction time should be about five weeks, Boothbay Region Refuse Disposal District Manager Steve Lewis said.
Lewis said recycling will continue throughout the construction project and a temporary carport has been purchased to house interim recycling bins. Lewis said Refuse District staff will be ready to assist dump users and to keep traffic flowing.
Once completed, the new recycling building will be significantly larger, solar panel equipped and oriented for recycling on the way out rather than in, ending the current entrance traffic jam.
