Young girl shows passion about stopping marine debris
Hannah Hills of Boothbay doesn’t like to see garbage washing up on the shore.
Hills, 9, the daughter of Heather and Michael Hills of Boothbay, got inspired to do something about it this past summer.
“When my brother Byran and I were visiting my Nana in Stuart, Florida, we went to an aquarium that had lots of sea turtles and I saw a poster about trash found in the ocean. I said to myself ‘That’s the same stuff that washes up on my grandparents’ beach in Southport. I should make a poster like that for the people back home so they can see how bad throwing stuff like that in the ocean really is.’”
This past summer, Hills created a display board called the “Life Span of Garbage” for the Maine State Aquarium in West Boothbay Harbor about marine debris.
“It has helped to create public awareness about this ongoing issue and the display is entitled ‘Trash of the Sea,’” said Elaine Jones, director of education for the Maine Department of Marine Resources.
The Aquarium staff, along with junior ambassador Hannah, have decided to organize a community coastal clean-up on Saturday, Sept. 24 as part of Maine Coastweek.
“In the next week, we will be working to organize crews of volunteers who will be assigned to specific locations,” said Jones.
