“Children of Eden JR,” a musical written by lyricist and composer Stephen Schwartz (“Godspell,” “Wicked”) was performed brilliantly by the Boothbay Region Y Arts Encore Teen Ensemble in the Y gym on Saturday, Aug. 14. The group of 19 young players did three performances of the one and a half hour play, despite the heat and humidity.

The Biblical story is based on the stories of Adam and Eve and Noah and the Great Flood. And as director and choreographer Emily Mirabile wrote in the play’s program, “Perhaps there is something deeply comforting in learning that mistakes like Adam’s and Eve’s are to be expected and will eventually lead to growth. Maybe Noah’s tale reminds us that no matter what ‘storm’ arises, there is certain to be solid ground waiting beyond the seemingly endless deluge. Regardless of the ‘take away,’ both stories, at core, are stories of hope.” The 30 songs were sung on key in groups and by soloists and the choreography was top notch.

The cast included Phoebe Cook, Spencer Pottle, Emerson Harris, Trey Tibbetts, Rebecca Tomasello, Anderson Pierpan, Ford Harris, Abby Amaral, Finn Sullivan, Paige Botts, Rory Vaudreuil, Emma Castonia, Sarah Harris, Sophia Mansfield, Anna Tomasello, Laura Tomasello, Alana LaCourse, Sofia Michaud and Jojo Shea. Ella Watts provided technical assistance.
