You could almost imagine seeing Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor strolling arm-in-arm as Spencer Pottle, Sarah Harris and Trey Tibbetts made their way across the stage singing “Good Morning” in the Y-Arts performance of “Singin’ in the Rain Jr.” at the Lincoln Theater in Damariscotta on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 21.

The veteran Y-Arts performers led a 40-member cast, which also included a stellar and funny performance by another Y-Arts veteran, Sophia Mansfield.

The story is about a silent film star Don Lockwood (Pottle) who falls out of sorts with his co-star Lina Lamont (Mansfield) and falls for another actress, Kathy Selden (Harris). Despite Lamont’s continued effort to hook up with Lockwood, Lockwood and his former vaudeville partner Cosmo Brown (Tibbetts) conspire to replace Lamont with Selden for their next film, “The Dueling Cavalier.” Lots more shenanigans transpire – including pies in the faces of several characters and dubbing Selden’s voice over Lamont’s nasal voice – and Selden is finally revealed as the real star of the show.

Besides the hit title song and “Good Morning,” 11 other songs were performed, including the hilarious “Make ‘Em Laugh.”

“Singin’ in the Rain Jr.” was the third and final production of the Y-Arts Theater Camp led by Emily Mirabile this summer, with “The Aristocats Kids” and “Schoolhouse Rock Jr.” performed previously.

In September, Y-Arts performers will begin rehearsals for a first-ever collaboration with Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in a production of “Alice in Wonderland Jr.” Alice and The White Rabbit will take the audience through the gardens to meet various characters. The performances are scheduled for Oct. 4, 5 and 6 at 4:30 p.m.
