Work halts on Southport, Boothbay bridge projects
As weather improves and spring begins to emerge, residents on Barters Island and Southport Island have been hopeful work on their bridges would speed up.
It is not. Both projects have stayed close to schedule through winter, but the coronavirus has now brought things to a halt.
Glenn Philbrook, project resident and on-site manager for Maine Department of Transportation, said Wednesday, April 8, “Both the Barters Island project and the Southport project have been impacted by Covid-19. Both projects have critical items that were manufactured in other states, states in which they have shut down all manufacturing facilities.”
Faced with delays in materials, “Reed and Reed is shutting down the Barters Island project for two weeks (at a minimum) and Wyman & Simpson have run out of work to perform on Thompson’s Bridge until their manufactured components are delivered,” Philbrook said.
“Both projects will have their completion dates extended as a result, but these delays are unknown at the moment.”
