Won't hold my breath
Dear Editor:
This past spring, our legislature, by one vote in the House, passed a bill to join the National Popular Vote (NPV) Compact. An agreement that, once it were to take effect, would give our Electoral College votes to whichever presidential candidate won the national popular vote.
So far, 18 states representing 209 Electoral votes have passed the NPV Compact. This year, with the exception of Maine's 2nd District, every one of those votes will be cast for the person who lost the popular vote. If NPV were in effect, the 226 Electoral votes that Kamala Harris has earned would drop to just 18. Donald Trump would have a nearly unanimous vote of 420-18 in the Electoral College. Quite a mandate!
I am looking forward to the statement from the Democratic leadership and Representative Holly Stover (who cast the deciding vote in favor of NPV) calling for Maine's Electoral votes to all be cast for the winner of the National Popular Vote: Donald J. Trump. I won't hold my breath.
