A Maine tradition for radio enthusiasts since the 1980s returns to the Windsor Fairgrounds Saturday morning, Sept. 12

Hosted by the Lincoln County Amateur Radio Club, the Windsor Hamfest features a tailgating flea market, examinations for those interested in upgrading or becoming a licensed amateur radio operator, and a social opportunity for the hobby.

Ham radio, or amateur radio, is a popular hobby and non-commercial communication service. Operators use designated radio frequencies to talk across the town, around the world, and even to astronauts in space without relying on the internet or cell phone networks. Amateur radio operators are licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allowing them to operate for many varied purposes such as: experimentation with radio technology, as a sport, competitions, emergency communications and public service, just to name a few. There are approximately three million hams worldwide, with approximately 800,000 in the United States.

The public is invited to see demonstrations of amateur radio in action with a GOTA (Get On The Air) station. The GOTA station gives you, the visitor, an opportunity to get on the air.

Located nine miles east of Augusta, Windsor Fairgrounds is located at 82 Ridge Road (Route 32), Windsor. This central Maine location provides an excellent venue for this well-attended annual event.

With door prizes, concessions, meetings and more, the event is held 8 a.m. to noon, rain or shine. A $10 entrance fee includes a bottle of water or hot coffee. All proceeds go toward supporting the non-profit Club’s ongoing initiatives to promote and preserve the hobby of amateur radio within the local community. The club meets regularly on the second Wednesday of even months in Damariscotta at the CLC YMCA where all are welcome.
