Walter Manter

Walter Manter died of a heart attack at age 81 on Feb. 14, 2021.

He was born on Aug. 24, 1939 in Lewiston, Maine to parents Greta and Wayne Manter. The family lived in many places as his dad was a customs officer in northern Maine. Walter’s education included Fort Fairfield schools, University of Maine, University of New Hampshire and various graduate school programs.

Walter married Connie Miller, from West, Massachusetts in 1967. They recently celebrated their 54th anniversary. They had two children, Jon and Todd, living in various places ranging from Groton, Massachusetts, Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, finally settling in East Boothbay, Maine.

In the 1960s, Walter’s career evolved during a transformational electronics era. He worked primarily with Digital Equipment Corporation, 1967-2010, retiring from Hewlett Packard.

Walter had many interests, skills and talents. In the early 1970s, he and Connie purchased and developed land on the coast of Maine in East Boothbay. Walter was a visionary general contractor with ongoing building and expansion endeavors. In 1980 he founded and managed Manter Properties in Portland, Maine. He had been significantly involved with sons Jon and Todd in major building renovations, boat building projects, and property management.

Throughout his life, Walter and Connie supported each other and their careers while cherishing life with family and friends.

Walter and Connie enjoyed adventures with family, friends and colleagues. Boating, skiing, and traveling throughout the country and the world.

Walter was blessed with a wonderful life; he was a “hoot” and a true legend. He made a difference!

Walter is survived by: Connie Miller Manter of East Boothbay; sons, Jon and his wife Beth and their daughter Lila Manter of South Berwick, Maine, Todd and his wife Lien Manter of Portland, Maine; brother, Paul Manter and family; and sister, Elaine and her husband David Gifford and family. Walter is also survived by many wonderful relatives and friends from the United States and beyond.
