The Waldo Theatre in Waldoboro has announced the lineup for its new EPIC Winter Film Series. The Waldo has assembled three EPIC titles that have been frequently missed or overlooked by film aficionados.

The film series begins Sunday, Jan. 21 with Bernardo Bertolucci’s “1900,” a majestic 5-plus hour epic starring a young Robert DeNiro and a host of other familiar actors. With a sweeping score by composer Ennio Morricone, it’s an intimate portrait of the class struggle between two families as they face political upheaval and the rise of fascism and socialism in 20th Century Italy.

The series’ next film on Monday, Feb. 19 is “After Hours,” a don’t miss “dream logic” from Martin Scorsese described as a darkly comic tale of mistaken identity. The film is also often credited with helping Scorcese revive his career after a trio of flops.

The series winds up Sunday, March 10 with Ingmar Bergman’s only horror film, “Hour of the Wolf,” starring Max von Sydow as a haunted painter living in voluntary exile with his wife, played by Liv Ullmann.

“What better way to spend a Maine winter Sunday afternoon than with a must-see EPIC film on the big screen!” said Liz McGregor, filmmaker, The Waldo’s film curator, and board Vice president. “We want audiences to experience these incredible classic films the way that they were intended to be seen… in an intimate, dark movie theater - we invite film lovers to come and rediscover the magic of seeing films in the theatre!”

“Our beautiful, 89-year-young Waldo Theatre is returning to its historic roots with this short film series,” said Susan Hodder, The Waldo’s executive director. “Once named one of the finest movie houses in the nation, The Waldo is a gem, where everyone is welcome to enjoy the myriad dimensions of cinema.”

Individual film tickets are just $10 in advance. A series ticket for all three films is available for $25 in advance. Tickets and information online at thewaldotheatre.org/film. Concessions will be available.
