Vote yes for Boothbay Region Land Trust
Dear Editor:
On Monday, May 5, 2014, town of Boothbay residents will finally have the chance to voice their opinions on the transfer of the Cross River property to Boothbay Region Land Trust (BRLT). We’ve all seen it: The Cross River Center sign off of Route 27, just imploring us to turn into the parking area. It doesn’t take one long to realize, however, that the Cross River Center is just that — a parking lot.
It is the goal of BRLT to change that. With the support of town officials, the Boothbay Civic Association and local clammers, the land trust has committed to establishing a usable parking facility and kiosk, as well as public hiking trails to improve waterfront access for working and recreational use.
These improvements would occur within one year of the property transfer to BRLT, and would allow convenient, reliable access for a multitude of user groups from clammers to kayakers, whether they are visiting the community or live here year-round. The Boothbay Region Land Trust has also proposed a public education center that would include staff offices and educational facilities for residents and area visitors.
With a yes vote from Boothbay residents, all of this is possible. Boothbay Region Land Trust has demonstrated its commitment to land conservation, public access and environmental education since 1980, and would like to continue to deliver on this commitment at the Cross River Center. So vote yes in support of Boothbay Region Land Trust on May 5.
