A view to sea

Mon, 11/05/2018 - 4:15pm

    Dear Editor:

The one best asset that Boothbay Harbor has is its “View to Sea.” This is the view looking south from Atlantic Avenue out to sea between Squirrel Island and Burnt Island to the unbroken horizon line. I can think of no other Maine harbor that can market this view. Not Portland, Camden or Rockland. Belfast looks down the bay, as do others.

The “Harbor” missed a great opportunity in not purchasing the Sample property way back in the late ’60s, property that is now Signal Point, with lack of foresight. History is about to repeat itself. Back then the Harbor could have purchased a deep water wharf, land for public parking and open green space.

For now we take this for granted when we can still look to seaward to an unbroken horizon line. When it is not there, except for a few able to pay for a space to view this asset between the glare of glass doors, will the rest of the public realize this great loss.

Visitors will come to Boothbay Harbor to enjoy the beauty here, It must preserved and present for the welcome observer. People will stop coming here if blocked off from the beauty of this place, and a sustainable asset is lost to most of us. The Harbor will lose a natural attraction.
