Nearly 40 Marines, other former military personal, friends and family gathered at the American Legion Hall in Boothbay to celebrate the 240th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps on Sunday, Nov. 8. As is customary, the birthday cake was cut by the oldest Marine present. John Druce, for the seventh consecutive year, cut the cake with the help of State Marine Corps League Commandant Gary Laweryson. Bill Martell of Fryeburg, the youngest Marine present, received the first piece.
Phil Chapman coordinated the event and would like to thank the many generous businesses who contributed to make the celebration possible: Coastal Maine Popcorn in Boothbay Harbor; Shaw's Supermarket in Wiscasset; from the Maine Mall in South Portland – Dunkin' Donuts, Pizza Hut, Burger King, Wendy’s and McDonald’s; Home Depot of Topsham; Lowe's of Brunswick; Hallowell Seafood; Emery's Meat and Produce of Gardiner; Goggin’s IGA of Randolph; Tractor Supply Company of Brunswick; and Army Barracks Store of Scarborough.
