Updated: Veggies to Table founder to speak at Garden Club meeting
Veggies to Table Founder Erica Berman will be speaking Wednesday, March 8 at 12:30 p.m. at the Boothbay Region Garden Club meeting to share the story of Veggies to Table and talk about their mission to help feed those in need in our community and their growing methods. She will also discuss the abundance of vegetables, herbs, and flowers we can all grow in Maine; where to buy the best seeds and supplies, and when to start growing. The meeting is at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church, 32 Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor.
After 20 years in Paris and Italy, Erica swapped city living for a life steeped in sustainable values, nature, and creating less waste when she moved to Maine in 2012 with her French husband, and Veggies to Table co-founder, Alain Ollier. In 2019 the launch of Veggies to Table stemmed from a desire to give back to the many living with hunger right here in Midcoast Maine (approximately 1 in 5 children and 1 in 7 adults).
Veggies to Table is a non-profit 501c3 grow-to-donate farm located in Newcastle. They grow 85+ kinds of organic fruits, herbs, vegetables, and flowers with 200+ specific varieties. To optimize yields, they practice no-till, high intensity growing practices. Everything grown is donated to local pantries, schools, housing organizations, and organizations serving lower income community members. With their large choice of nutrient dense vegetables, fruit and herbs grown on the farm, Veggies to Table aims to help those who struggle to put sufficient, high-quality food on the table for themselves and their families. They work to ensure universal access to nutritious food for all, and promote the well-being of everyone involved in the food-production and consumption process. Additionally, they grow and donate thousands of flowers each season to those in need of joy.
Winter is almost over, and this is a great way to kick-start planning for your summer vegetable and flower gardens. From tomatoes and cucumbers, basil, dill, and melons to dahlias, zinnias, perennials and more! Join us for this exciting talk!
