Updated: East Boothbay property damaged in Monday morning fire
An East Boothbay man received second degree burns to his right arm during a Monday morning fire. Seth Hedgecock was working on his vehicle in his barn at 14 Fish Hawk Hill Road around 9 a.m. when the blaze started. Hedgecock was using a hot work-light, checking his vehicle for a gas leak. A drop of gas hit the lamp and flames ignited. The barn became fully engulfed with flames resulting in the structure being leveled.
The Boothbay Fire Department arrived on the scene around 9:30 a.m. and used heavy hoses to dose the flames. The firefighters extinguished the fire by 3 p.m., according to Boothbay Fire Chief Richard Spofford.
“We hit it pretty hard with hoses and had it pretty well-knocked down in about an hour and half. And by 3 p.m. it was all clear,” said Boothbay Fire Chief Richard Spofford.
Hedgecock was the only person injured. He was treated by emergency medical technicians at the scene and he later taken to a local hospital, according to Spofford.
The billowing black smoke could be seen in the sky for miles emanating from the structure fire. The Hedgecock’s neighbor, Jamie Golden, saw the smoke while on a boat in Linekin Bay. He immediately returned home to check out the situation.
“I looked up a saw a large plume of black smoke coming from the direction of my house,” Jamie Golden said. “So I hopped on my bike and got right over here.”
His wife, Jane Golden, also witnessed the fire. Jane Golden was inside her home when she heard a strange noise coming from outside. At first, she thought it was her husband watering down their kayaks. As Golden ventured outside, she realized the noise was coming from her neighbor’s yard. As she walked closer to her neighbor’s house, Golden realized the noise came from loud crackling flames.
“When I looked outside I discovered the noise wasn’t water, but fire,” Jane Golden said. “I kept walking to see where it was coming from and then I saw Seth on the phone calling the fire department.”
Spofford said the property owners — Hedgecock and his wife, Ann — were insured.
Boothbay was assisted by Boothbay Harbor, Southport, Edgecomb, Wiscasset and Newcastle fire departments.
