An unexpected patriot

You heard the patriotic music first. And its being Independence Day, you followed it.

Late afternoon Sunday, on the east side of Boothbay Harbor, people were treated to a good old-fashioned tribute to independence and patriotism in the form of Geoff Kansa.

For a second Fourth of July, Kansa dressed in patriotic garb, took up his American flag, and went for a walk. With fife and drum music each step, Kansa walked 10 miles July 4, ending where he began, at his home on Kenney Field Drive in Boothbay Harbor.

Many people along this and last year’s 10-mile walk came outside to see him, or called out from indoors, “Thank you for doing this!” and/or applauding.

“It’s fun! I started (walking) last year when no one seemed to be sharing their patriotism,” Kansa said. “I love my country and I believe we should all show our love of country, our patriotism, in a positive way.”

Geoffrey Kansa serves with the Coast Guard station in West Boothbay Harbor.
