Trivia Night at The Boathouse Bistro

Are you a member of team “French Toast Mafia”? Were you trying to remember what character from “Shrek” married a dragon, or what was a black and white bird native only to the southern hemisphere? If so, you were probably at The Boathouse Bistro Tapas Bar & Restaurant's Monday Night Trivia, hosted by Shane Hatcher and Darrell Gudroe.
A total of eight teams competed Jan. 4, pitting their wits against the formidable duo of Jarrod and Katie Norcott. These two have put together teams for the previous three weeks and taken home the prize, and last Monday was no exception. Paired up with Karin Guerin, Alka Smith and Jill Reynolds, their team “Ratatouille” won with 28 out of 30 questions right and took home a $75 gift certificate to the Bistro.
The second place team was “Oops I forgot my meds” while third place went to “Lamby & Banjo,” one of only two, two-person teams in the room (which yours truly was on).
Teams can be anywhere from one to five people, and entry is only $3. Trivia Night takes place on the second floor. Each team picks a name and is given a sheet to write down answers on, and hosts Gudroe and Hatcher take turns reading out the questions, which are also displayed on the television screens around the room. Cell phones are strictly banned — no Googling for answers here!
The game is played with three rounds consisting of two categories. On Jan. 4 the categories were famous people (with a promise of no Kardashian questions), animals, television, geography, war, and non-fiction ... and interestingly, every single question asked in “non-fiction” was fictional.
After every round, the standings are read off, with people in the bottom known as “Bad Guessers.” Twenty-five people played in total, five of whom came for dinner but stayed when they discovered it was Trivia Night.
“It's one of our famous places to eat,” said Lucy Kuder, who came for dinner with her husband but stayed for trivia. “The food, the vibe, everything about the Bistro we love.”
“It's our first time but we might come again,” added Jay Kuder. The Kuders were team “JNL,” and were the second of only two, two-person teams.
Up at the bar, the “East Boothbay Babes” laughed and joked; the team “Oops I forgot my meds” got frequently chided to quit talking by Hatcher. Many people enjoyed dinner and drinks while playing, with Ralph and Elena Smith were busy keeping everything running smoothly out of the bar and kitchen.
No one got the bonus question right this week. The category was “New Year's Eve” and the question was, “What was the first year the ball was dropped in Times Square?” For the record, it was 1907.
Trivia Night is hosted every Monday at the Bistro. It starts around 6 p.m. and goes to around 8 p.m. Happy hour, with half off select appetizers, wine, drinks and beer, is 4 to 6 p.m.
Congratulations, you made it to the end, so you get the answers. Donkey married dragon, and the bird is a penguin.
