Trevett Column: Halloween Party Oct. 18

Tue, 10/10/2023 - 9:00am

Do you want to pretend you are someone or something else? Now is your chance by attending the BICA annual Halloween party on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 5:30 p.m. Laura and Bucky will be the hosts for the evening and Paul will supervise the kitchen. You are asked that you bring either a main dish, a side, a salad or a dessert to share. You are welcome to bring you own appetizers as well as your beverage of choice. BICA will have water and coffee available.

Costumes are not mandatory but there will be some amazing prizes for those who do chose to dress up. This has always been a very fun and entertaining evening.

The September potluck was well attended and an anonymous quote summed it up-- “there was an abundance of delicious food.” Graham’s best mate, John, was visiting from France, Alan was present, and Kim kept the Spofford Lane kitchen crew on task.

Rob did a popup auction. He had a local artist’s painted buoy of the Trevett Post Office and a great canvas bag which held photos of the east and west sides of the island. Rob auctioned the items off for the benefit of the BICA treasury earning it over $100. Rob could probably sell someone the Brooklyn Bridge.

We were very fortunate to have had twin brothers and lifelong bridge tenders Duane and Dwight Lewis give an after dinner presentation in which they reminisced about their family’s combined 147 years tending the Southport, Trevett, and Bristol bridges. They shared paintings, photos and news clippings and told stories of cars going off the Southport bridge, of sinking boats and of several rude boat captains. We heard about the many well-deserved recognitions they received on retirement. And we were treated to a special song by Dwight.

The winning ticket drawn for the firewood raffle was a donated ticket meaning BICA will be able to donate the wood to someone on the island that they know needs help to stay warm this winter. A ginormous thank you to all the ticket buyers.

The November potluck will be a spaghetti dinner so mark Nov. 15 on your calendar now. There will also be an after-dinner game of Maine trivia.

If you know of a neighbor or someone on the island who needs a little assistance, please let Evelyn know. And as always, she (207-380-6977 or evelynshahan@gmail.com ) is happy to answer any questions you may have about BICA, its mission or its events.
