Thurlow Carl “Butch” Brewer of Murray Hill Road, East Boothbay died Dec. 29, 2022 after a short battle with cancer.

He was born March 11, 1943 in Damariscotta, son of Carl “Bo” and Carrie Thompson Brewer. He was educated in the local school system, served in the U.S. Navy and spent nearly all of his life as a commercial fisherman.

He served as captain on several sardine company purse seiners, including Homes Packing Company’s Ocean Delight, P. Borealis and Wave Guide. In 1978 he had a 56-foot boat built named the Sarah B which was used mostly as a dragger/purse seiner, he later captained the purse seiner Eva Grace.  He traveled the coast stop seining for sardines and also spent many winter months based out of Gloucester, Massachusetts. In the more recent years, he was captaining lobster boats Sea Horse and Why Bother. His favorite job was his last to date which was filling in as sternman on his grandson’s boat Papa’s Pride. He had a lifelong passion for tuna fishing and took home trophies in the Boothbay Harbor Tuna Club’s annual competition.

He was a life member of Bath Lodge of Elks; he was also a member of the Boothbay Region Fish and Game. He had a passion both fishing and hunting. For the better part of his life, he enjoyed golf at the Boothbay Region Country Club. For many years, he was active in DePatsy’s bowling league in Waldoboro where he held an unofficial world candlepin record for many years. Later he took up both steel and soft tip darts and traveling the state for tournaments and even competed in a national tournament in Chicago.

In his younger years, he enjoyed coaching young athletes, including YMCA basketball and Little League baseball. Those who know him well know that he has never stopped talking about his championship Little League team! In his later years he enjoyed traveling to coach “from the stands” his grandchildren. No distance was too far to jump in the car to go watch them. He was one of the original members of the Fishermen’s Festival committee and was active for many years in the local celebrity golf tournament to benefit Special Olympics.

He and his wife, Mary, catered old-fashioned clambakes and Butch was known for his colorful speeches as to how to catch a lobster.

He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Mary D. Brewer, and brother Neil Brewer.

Surviving family members: daughter, Sarah Morley; son-in-law, Andrew Morley; granddaughter, Hannah Morley; grandson, Nicholas Morley; brother, Wayne Brewer and wife Robin; brother, Gary Brewer and wife Linda; sister-in-law, Simone Brewer; brother-in-law, Munro Dodge and wife Mary; and several important nieces and nephews.
