Three 'sports' things

Olympic Games: Are you looking forward to watching the 2020 Olympic Games from Tokyo, Japan the next two weeks, July 23 to Aug. 8? Even with a few American athletes already out of the Games due to COVID-19 and one disqualified for testing positive for marijuana, it will still be exciting to watch the other athletes perform, especially gymnast Simone Biles, Team USA (men's and women's basketball teams), swimmer Katie Ledecky, sprinter Noah Liles and others. Coverage should be on TV throughout the day, with prime time probably featuring the top athletes and competitions. I enjoy watching track and field and swimming most of all.

Red Sox: The team is rolling along in first place in the American League East and is fun to watch. Many of the key players are under age 30 – most notably, Xander Bogaerts and Raphael Devers – and if they are able to keep healthy, the team should compete well for the rest of the year. Other players under age 30 include the new kid they just brought up, Jarren Duran, Kiki Hernandez, Alex Verdugo, Hunter Renfro, Bobby Dalbec and pitchers Eduardo Rodriguez, Nick Pivetta and Tanner Houck. Hopefully the older guys like J.D Martinez and Chris Sale (barring a relapse on his repaired arm) can lead them to the playoffs.

Skateboarding: I was driving down Townsend Avenue the other day when I came across five skateboarders rolling down the road beside me. Not sure if that is allowed – I know that they can't be on the sidewalks – but I also feel that skateboarding in a heavy traffic area may not be wise. One of the skateboarders could have tripped and gone under the wheels of a car. Just sayin'.

    Have a good sporting week!

P.S. Congratulations Coach Walt Gorneau for being inducted into the Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame!
