Thanks for the helping hand
Dear Editor:
When I received the $850 relief check from Governor Mills, I found myself weeping with gratitude, not just because of the much-needed financial help, but also because of the content of the accompanying letter which recapped the positive signs of economic recovery in our state. That letter is posted on my refrigerator so I can re-read it often; it gives me hope for a better future and makes me proud to be a Mainer, an American, and a Democrat.
I have not been able to say that for a long time.
In her letter, Governor Mills gave credit to the Democrats, Republicans, and Independents in the Legislature who agreed that some of the state's record surplus should be given to the people of Maine who most need it. How refreshing in these times of divisiveness!
That check, along with the $130 sales tax refund, has enabled me to "put my money where my mouth is" and actively support some of the causes that are dear to my heart. In four generations of my family I've personally experienced or witnessed the effects of poverty, mental and physical disabilities, domestic violence, suicide, incarcerations, substance abuse, and sexual abuse. Because I qualify for Medicare, Mainecare, and subsidized housing, I'm able to subsist on my Social Security benefits, but it lifts my spirits to be able to donate a few dollars to MOFGA, ACLU, LBGQT groups, Maine Family Planning, The Nature Conservancy, the Boothbay Region Land Trust, the Restorative Justice Project, our local musicians, artists, writers, Food Pantries, co-ops, gleaners and cleaners...and, just for me, a therapeutic massage!
Money doesn't buy happiness, but it takes the pressure off when we're given a helping hand, and can then give back to the helpers. I think Mr. Rogers would be proud of the state of Maine right now!
