Thankful for grant

    Dear Editor:

Finding Our Voices sends a huge thank you to the Boothbay select board and voters for their generous support of Finding Our Voices, with a $500 grant. This grant is wonderful validation of our grassroots, survivor-powered, local and statewide efforts.

The money will bring safety and freedom to Maine women and children, including those from Lincoln County, who are trapped in domestic abuse, through the nonprofit's Get Out Stay Out Fund. The fund pays for such items as emergency motel stays, apartment rent, car repairs, and storage units.

In the two years since the Get Out Stay Out Fund was seeded by the Sunshine Lady Foundation, Finding Our Voices has empowered many Boothbay Region families to escape perpetual fear and misery in what should be the safe, happy place of home. Referrals to the fund come from partners, including district attorney offices, police departments, homeless shelters, domestic abuse agencies, and also from businesses reaching out on behalf of employees.

Three Lincoln County women appear on the group's groundbreaking domestic abuse-awareness posters and bookmarks featuring the photo portraits of 44 Maine survivors aged 18 to 81. Governor Janet T. Mills is also on these posters as a survivor. The posters and bookmarks have come twice in three years to Boothbay Region communities.

Everyone is invited to join Finding Our Voices on Wednesday, May 10, starting at 5:30 p.m., at the Freeport Community Library, where eight survivors will lead a community conversation about domestic abuse. And look for this program at Skidompha Library in October! For more information about Finding Our Voices, visit https://findingourvoices.net
