Stephen B. Rollins, 73, of Garland, Maine departed this world for heaven on Jan. 17, 2019.

Born Nov. 1, 1945, Steve was a native of Monhegan Island, Maine.

He spent most of his life as a seaman. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy, was a lobsterman and finished the last 10 years of his career sailing the world as a U.S. Merchant Marine. In 1981 Steve was awarded the U.S. Coast Guard Silver Lifesaving Medal for his bravery in aiding in the rescue of two Coast Guardsmen that had capsized in a storm, stranded on Smutty Nose Island.

Steve was a talented carpenter, artist, wood worker and well known for his love of cribbage and fishing. He had a generous, gentle spirit and the many friends who dined with him always shared “good groceries.” He wrote and published a children’s book, “Ronnie the Lobster.”

Steve loved helping others. A member of AA, he recently celebrated 30 years of sobriety. He was a member of the Garland Christian Fellowship, Dexter American Legion, Rockport Keystone RAC #24 and Rockland Knox Lodge No. 89.

Steve is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Peggy (Brimmer) Rollins; Peggy’s large family who adored Steve; three sons from a previous marriage, Jeffrey Rollins of Union, Christopher Rollins and Gregory Rollins, both of Monhegan Island; brother, Courtney Day of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two nieces; and two nephews.

A graveside service will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Garland, Maine in the spring of 2019. A notice will be posted then to provide details. Those who wish to remember Steve in a special way may make gifts in his memory to Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 3151, Augusta, Maine 04330.
