Spirit of America Award given to Community Energy Fund

This year's Spirit of America Award from Damariscotta went to the organization that helped keep the community warm during the past few harsh winters.
The Community Energy Fund was given the award during the board of selectmen meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 2.
Selectmen’s Chairman Robin Mayer said the founding trio of Todd Maurer, Charlie Ault and Robert Clifford had exemplified the ideals of the Spirit of America by helping to keep vulnerable members of the community warm.
Last year the organization raised more than a million dollars, Mayer said, and $13,000 of that money was spent to help keep Damariscotta residents warm.
According to the Energy Fund's website, the nonprofit will seek out families who may not be able to pay the heating bill and will provide assistance. According to the website, in 2014 the Community Energy Fund spent $148,252 in assistance to Lincoln County families. Of that money, $35,000 was spent in Waldoboro, $13,000 was spent in both Damariscotta and Boothbay and $12,000 was spent in Wiscasset.
