Significant progress has been made this month on Thompson’s Bridge on Southport. Interested passers-by have been able to view the bridge’s ongoing removal and the work to rebuild the eastern end abutment. According to Maine Department of Transportation’s Glenn Philbrook, in the first week of November, contractors Wyman and Simpson finished building the eastern abutment cofferdam and continued excavating and removing structural rock within it. By Nov. 12, excavation within the cofferdam was finished and seal concrete had been placed at abutment 1, Philbrook said.

“Wyman and Simpson also continued removing the existing bridge, span 2 and 3,” Philbrook said. The project continues to move according to schedule with a reopening expected in late May.
