Southport Yacht Club
At SYC we are closing out July with all the summer fun we can dream up. Saturday morning marked our 10th annual Rock the Boat 5K run/walk. There were nearly 200 people running, walking, cheering, and acting as course marshals to keep everyone safe. Winners in each category were elated to take home a pie as well as the Auber/Hurd family who received a pie for having the most family members participating or volunteering in the event. Carl Houghton received a pie for being the oldest participant at 87 years young! His grandson Sam won the Boys 12-18 category with at time of :20:28.2.
The Centennial Summer Soiree also took place on Saturday and while the weather wasn’t what we hoped, nothing could dampen our spirits! Cozy’s Dockside prepared a delicious meal of Baked Haddock, Chicken Piccata, Steak Tips, and a veggie Pesto Quinoa dish with three seatings. After dinner the School Street Band got us all tearing up the dance floor. There was a group rendition of Happy Birthday to SYC right before we dove into the dessert. Thanks to junior sailors Joe Duffy and Skye Harrington for braving the elements to rescue some turnabouts that had escaped their moorings and were drifting around the harbor.
This week we are hosting the Maine State Optimist Championships at SYC on Wednesday and Thursday. Thanks to Chace Brinegar for taking the lead in running this event. Good luck to all the sailors who are coming from yacht clubs across the state to test their skills on the Sheepscot. Saturday night is our annual wine tasting with Jack Bauman, past commodore and sommelier, leading the event. The theme and wine selection reflects Barbara and Jack’s recent two month sojourn in the realm of great wines, La Belle France.
