Southport Yacht Club
How nice to see the sun and the Sheepscot River once again. We hope everyone has an opportunity to get out on the water and enjoy a beautiful Maine day!
Last week included a visit from the US Naval Academy Midshipmen, sailing with our students and enjoying kickball at the school. Some of our Junior Sailors also got to see the high tech race boats that the USNA Sailing Team just raced in the Marblehead-Halifax Race and at BHYC's Shipyard Classic Regatta over the weekend. This is an inspirational opportunity for our students to learn about the wider world of sailing and racing beyond SYC.
Last Sunday we enjoyed Family Fun Day at the Southport School. Special thanks to Nancy Doyle for leading this effort with a host of volunteers. We invited the Southport community to join in the fun with a bouncy house, balloons, magician and activities for all. Our Centennial Speaker Series continues with Jack Bauman's talk on Monday, July 24 at 7 p.m. He will highlight the founding of SYC and show 1930s film footage of a race on the Sheepscot with the Coast Guard acting as safety boats.
It will be another fast-paced week at SYC. Saturday morning at 8 is the Rock the Boat 5K Road Race. This annual event is a favorite for all ages. You can run, walk or cheer the crowd on! Volunteer race monitors with cow bells provide inspiration for all on the race course who enjoy great views of Cozy Harbor and the Sheepscot. Watermelon at the finish line is a reward for all, while winners in each age division take home the pies! We still need some donated pies, so please click here if you can purchase or bake. Registration is open until 5 p.m. on Friday. There is an extra $5 charge on Saturday for “day-of” registration.
It is a busy weekend for racing, both on land and sea. Saturday afternoon, July 29 is the Pratts Island Turnabout Race at 1, while Sunday at 11 a.m. is the rescheduled Seguin Island Trophy Race. With two divisions, this race includes a pursuit race to Seguin (or nearby) starting at 11 and R19 class racing round the buoys beginning at noon. Boats must register by Saturday at noon so we can calculate start times for Sunday's pursuit race.
Saturday evening is our Centennial Summer Soiree at 6! Enjoy live music with the School Street Band at SYC and dinner at Cozy's Dockside! Tickets may be purchased via the Eventbrite link sent to all members. Contact Jen Phippen for details: jphippen@gmail.com.
