We had a rainy week at SYC and had to postpone our Seguin Island Trophy Race and the Five Islands Turnabout Race/Sail. We have new dates and we are forging ahead with plans for this week! New dates for Seguin is Sunday, July 30 and the Five Islands Race will be held on Sunday, Aug. 6.

Alas, the weather gods looked kindly upon the SYC community and suspended the rain showers last Saturday evening. About 150 SYC enjoyed our annual lobster bake. The Junior building was full of tables decked out with blue and white checked tablecloths, the eight outside picnic tables were used and the deck with a few small tables had a bistro feel. Numerous “compliments to the chefs,” our neighbors Cozy’s Dockside, were heard throughout the evening. To conclude the dinner, trays and trays of home-baked dessert “bites,” interspersed with juicy watermelon slices, were passed, to the delight of all. Heartfelt thanks to the small cadre of SYC volunteers who did the baking! Appreciation also goes to the 25 or so who helped with set-up, clean-up, check-in, greeting, dessert plating/passing, and a bit of broom pushing. A good time was had by all.

To celebrate and give back to our community, SYC is hosting a Free Family Fun Day on Sunday, July 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. We have face painting, balloon twisters, magic tricks, a bounce house, popcorn, ice pops, hamburgers, hotdogs, lawn games and a big rope for tug ‘o war! We need help with set up, pop-up tents, general running of games and clean up! Two hour shifts only! Please email Nancy with any questions. The T-shirt deadline for the Rock the Boat 5K Run/Walk is this Wednesday, July 19 at 5 p.m. Everyone who registers by 5 is guaranteed a race T-shirt. The race takes place on Saturday, July 29. This is the 10th year of the event which brings together racers and volunteer course marshals for a fun-filled morning run/walk with great views of Cozy Harbor and the Sheepscot! There is watermelon for you at the finish and winners of each category receive a pie! Register online via Runsignup.

Jack Bauman will present at talk on Monday, July 24 at 7 p.m. Jack will talk about the early history of the SYC. His talk focuses on how a “yacht” club founded in 1923 as a motor-boat racing organization and with a membership drawn as much from local Southporters as from people calling Malden, Massachusetts their home. Thanks to a “Maldenite,” future commodore, and New York Advertising man, Donald H, White, SYC had by the 1930s evolved into highly reputed sailing organization. The talk will feature a film highlighting White’s piece de resistance, the 1938, U.S. Coast Guard-monitored Sheepscot Regatta.

Friday evening’s Cornhole Tournament was a great success! A great evening was had by all. Thank you to Dane Phippen for organizing and all of the members who let us borrow boards for the event. This year’s champions, Sailing Director Shannon Killian and guest instructor Dane Phippen were awarded a gift card to the Southport Store for a breakfast pizza.
