Southport Yacht Club

Southport junior sailors traveled to Prouts Neck Yacht Club to compete in the Maine State 420 Championship Regatta last week. Our eight sailors joined the line of over forty boats all hailing from various parts of Maine.  Breeze conditions varied throughout the event.  After two long days on the water, there were eight great races, which ultimately allowed for one dropped score for each boat. Overall the Southport Junior Foundation placed well. A huge congratulations to our two boats who were awarded for their outstanding performances! Charlie Apolinsky and crew Brian Goldsmith came in 2nd place overall and Lucas Thress and crew Peter Bauman came in 4th place overall! Additionally, our other two boats had an excellent showing for their first ever 420 regatta. Alex Goldsmith and crew Maggie Doyle came in 19th and brothers Colin and Gavin Holt came in 33rd overall! Congratulations to all!

The cooler evening temperatures on Saturday night did not deter our members from attending the Porch Party. The spread of appetizers offered tasty morsels displayed in beautiful pottery and platters. We all enjoyed gathering and catching up while the sun turned from gold to pink.

Sunday’s Pratt’s Island Trophy Races had a great turnout with 16 turnabouts on the line. Sailors ranged in age from six to seventy. Given the name of the race, the windward mark was set half way up the Pratt’s Island shore. One of the races included a circumnavigation of Cedarbush Island.  First place for the junior division was the team of Daphne Walsh and Rachel Phippen. Second place was the team of Blake and Luke Donnellan, along with CJ Hanley.  Third place was Parker Baker with crew Stella Rossi and Nora McDonough. In the adult division there was a tie for first place with Anne Grimes Rand winning the tiebreaker due to her two first place finishes.  Charlie Apolinsky with Fisher Brown ended up in second place.  Third place went to Will Jacobs and Chapman Brinegar.

This weekend holds three events at SYC, sure to please the whole family. The Rock the Boat 5K run/walk is at 8 a.m. Saturday morning.
