Southport students explore Burnt Island
On Wednesday, Oct. 5, Southport Central School’s 4th, 5th and 6th grade students had the opportunity to visit Burnt Island. The excursion company Balmy Days offered the class a first-class ride out to the island. Once on the island, Elaine Jones led the class in a handful of engaging and educational activities.
Students started their day by digging for mussels, clams, and a variety of worms that inhabit Maine’s vast, coastal mudflats. Elaine then took the kids on a trip into tide pools that were buzzing with marine life. The afternoon found our classes learning how to use hand-held GPS devises and exploring every square foot of the island. A trip to the top of Burnt Island light was the perfect ending to our extraordinary day.
Thank you to Elaine Jones and the boat operators of Balmy Days for making our trip to Burnt Island so memorable.
