Southport selectmen approved an agreement May 29 with Sunrise Ecologic of Boothbay to administer a $67,000 state grant for work on the Beach Road. Last year, selectmen hired Shri Verrill’s company as a consultant in applying for enrollment in the state’s Community Resilience Partnership. 

Membership in the organization made Southport eligible to apply for climate-related Maine Department of Transportation grants. Southport will use the grant towards a Beach Road drainage project. The project has an estimated $93,070 cost to replace a culvert with a larger one and pay for a study to determine if the height of the sea wall needs to increase. 

Selectmen will take $12,000 from the grant as Sunrise Ecologic’s fee for administration. Southport will receive the grant in three installments, according to selectman Gerry Gamage. “We will receive each installment as work is completed,” he said. 

In other action, selectmen voted unanimously to approve a one-day liquor license for Big Tree Catering. The service is catering a Squirrel Island wedding this summer, said Gamage. Selectman also approved Mechele Vanderlaan’s town hall rental request for a Jan. 18 birthday party. Selectmen tabled two agenda items. One regards a state of Maine correspondence about submerged lands. The other is a mooring permit waiver question.
