Southport Scout completes Eagle Scout park project
On Sunday, Aug. 7, Boy Scout Troop 238's, Jacob Bishopp, his family, friends, and members of the Southport Methodist Church officially opened a park he created for his Eagle Scout project with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The park is located at the corner of Cross Road and Route 27, south of the church.
The Reverend Richard Rego blessed the park, Scoutmaster Sarah Sherman said a few words about the troop's choices of Eagle Scout projects, and Jacob read a speech thanking all his volunteers and donors: Troop 238's Scouts and their families, the Southport Methodist Church for the use of their land to create the park, the Southport Island Association, the Southport Fire Department (Troop 238 sponsor), Eagle Scout Gerry Gamage, the Southport Public Works, Boothbay Region Greenhouses and Eagle Scout Bob Boyd, Matthew and Tanya Thibault for the use of their dump truck, N.A. Reny Construction, Boothbay Region Garden Club, E.M. Wood Construction, the Rotary Club of Boothbay Harbor, Linc Sample for the use of his woodworking shop to build the benches, his Grandfather George Blackman for assistance building the benches, Riverbend Campground for the donation of a picnic table, Jim Singer and Bill Benner (project mentors), Gary and Sheri LeRoy and Chris and Nancy Snow for their monetary donations, Evelyn "Mema" Sherman and Jean "Nini" Thompson (official Troop 238 Grandmothers who kept the volunteers well fed), Scoutmaster Sherman for her support helping him keep the project moving forward, and his mother and stepmother, Tammy Blackman and Jana Morehouse for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout the process.
Now that Jacob has completed this phase of his project, he will submit his official Eagle Scout Workbook paperwork to the council for approval. Once approved, Jacob's final step in the process will be the submission of his Eagle Scout application and an Eagle Scout board of review which will be held in Augusta.
