Southport Memorial Library receives generous gift from Cheryl Gemborys collection
The Southport Memorial Library is the grateful recipient of a generous donation from the family of former resident Cheryl Gemborys.
Gemborys was an active and generous supporter of the Southport community with a big influence in the growth of the library. Gemborys' grandfather, Roscoe Webber, grew up in Bangor in the house that now belongs to author Stephen King.
Roscoe and his wife Vila lived in Wellesley, Massachusetts. They summered in Maine, first at Juniper Point, then at the Landing Road property which they bought in 1958. The Vila B. Webber Charitable Trust, of which Gemborys was a trustee, has donated yearly to funds alloted for the Southport library.
Over the years the library was able to purchase a generator, flooring, replace the old furnace, purchase a water cooler and use the funds for various hospitality needs and special events.
This generous donation from Gemborys includes 35 large boxes of her diverse and interesting collections of books including cookbooks, creative and craft books, fiction and non-fiction along with many currents DVDs and movies.
While Gemborys lived on Southport, she oversaw funding grants not only for the Southport Library, but the Southport Central School, Southport Historical Society, the Boothbay Region Scholarship Fund, the Burnt Island Lighthouse Education Program and the Classroom at Sea.
The library is grateful for this significant contribution to the inventory and welcomes all area residents to share and enjoy as Gemborys would want us to.
