Southport Junior Yacht Club
This week was yet another chaotic yet incredible week at Southport Yacht Club, with wonderful weather and memories made that will be cherished forever.
The morning program had an exciting week this week featuring activities such as a trip to Spectacle Island, mastering rowing skills and various cruising while sharpening skills to learn more.
The afternoon class had a very eventful week, with the 420 Program and the Opti Program both participating in Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club’s Battle of the Bays regatta. The Opti Program had many sailors participate, some highlights were Andrew Merchack’s first place race result in a Green Fleet race, Thierry Stone’s 5th place finish in a Champ Fleet race and James Allison winning the Sportsmanship award.
The 420 program also had some great highlights such as Nathan Phippen and Graydon Smith having four top-5 finishes across eight races, SYC having three Boats finish in the top 10 in the second race, and Nathan Phippen and Graydon Smith, Mabel Kaler and Taylor Smith, and Hadden Brinegar and Gabriella Moen all finishing in the Top 10 overall, with 6th place, 7th place and 9th place respectively.
Although it stayed very hot over the course of the two days that the regatta took place, the sailors did not seem to struggle and kept spirits up throughout the regatta. On Friday, July 10, the annual “Around Island Race” took place where Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club and Southport Yacht Club race against each other all the way around Southport, starting at BHYC and finishing at SYC. The results clearly resulted in an SYC victory with Nathan Phippen and Graydon Smith winning the race, immediately followed by Nathan Phippen showing everyone his best Michael Phelps impression as he proceeded to immediately jump off his boat after crossing the finish line. It would not be until five more SYC boats crossed the finish line that a BHYC boat would cross.
Overall, this week was an amazing week at SYC, filled with competition, learning and laughter. Things the Club is looking forward to next week are; 420 Maine States at Haraseeket, Opti Maine States at Haraseeket and more wonderful days of sailing!
