Southport Junior Yacht Club
Another foggy week at the Southport Yacht Club was accompanied by some rain and thunder, but also by some sun for one day and one day only! As our fourth week of sailing concluded, and we reached the official midway point of the sailing summer, we were all wondering where all the time went. Looking back at some rough weather, but great attitudes and looking forward hoping for some sun to accompany such smiles.
On Monday, the morning class had two swim tests! The swimmers were Elena Pasek and Luna Rojas and a special shoutout goes to Rory Leao who had already completed a swim test, but swam again to accompany cousin, Luna. Once finished with their chilly swim, they received a comforting cup of hot chocolate, a towel, and an encouraging boost to start their sailing days.
This past week brought one of the most anticipated events of the summer: the Naval Academy sailors came to Southport! On Wednesday and Thursday, sailors in the afternoon class at SYC were given the opportunity to go on one of their sailboats for a couple of hours. In return, on Thursday, SYC hosted the sailors to the afternoon class to sail in 420s and Turnabouts.
Later that same day, the Southport Junior Yacht Club held their first Bingo of the summer! It was a very successful event, and even some of the Navy Academy sailors came to play. There were prizes from all sorts of stores around Boothbay Harbor, thank you to all of our donors! With prizes from sunglasses, to puzzles, to sweatshirts and hats, to donuts and fudge, to gift cards for local restaurants, everyone was happy.
As week 5 of sailing kicks off, you can mark your calendars for Kickball at the Southport School on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and the annual Rock the Boat 5k Run/Walk on Saturday starting at 8 a.m.! You can register to run/walk to 5k or to volunteer to organize the event on the Southport Yacht Club website.
Crossing our fingers for sunshine, smiles, and success in the next half of our summer!
