Although the start of this year’s summer sailing season did not have the best weather, this week made up for it! The sun finally came out and brought with it blue skies and strong winds, perfect for sailing.
In the morning class, Monday held four swim tests for Rivers Healy, Jack Henderson, Crosby Mair, and Kayla McGuire. After welcoming them to SYC with enthusiastic cheering throughout their quick swim, they were greeted by a welcoming buddy with a towel and a warm hot chocolate as a well deserved award before hopping into Turnabouts for the rest of the morning.
In the afternoon class, the 420s spent their week racing to prepare for the Battle of the Bays Regatta. Rachel Phippen and Skye Harrington came in first place for the week, with Stella Field and Avery Khetani in second, and Eleanor Marshall and Sofia Moen in third. As long term pairs and boats were made for the summer and the talk of upcoming regattas in the air, you could definitely say that racing is on the mind.
On Tuesday, SYC had an Independence Day Challenge for the morning and afternoon classes. The day consisted of bubbling gum blowing contests, watermelon swim contests, and many more fun games for the 4th of July!
Thursday, July 6 held SYC’s first Ice Cream Social of the summer! It was a major success and lots of fun for all ages; mark your calendars for the next one on August 10 at 7:00pm! The festivities this week did not fall short while wrapped up with the 100 boats on the Sheepscot for 100 years of SYC on Friday, July 7! A total of 113 boats made appearances to support, whether big or small, by motor or by sail. SYC decorated their boats with streamers galore, wore crowns and leis, and celebrated back on land with a cake. SYC sends love and appreciation to everyone who came out for the festivities and a special thank you to the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club for sending over their crew as well!
The calendar brings some exciting events such as kickball at the Southport School on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and the Battle of the Bays Regatta for 420s and Optis taking place July 10-12. As this summer of sailing kicks off, we are hoping for good weather, big smiles, and lots of learning and adventure!
