Another exciting week has flown by here at the Southport Yacht Club. We had perfect wind every day and not a bit of fog in the morning class. We would like to welcome Stuart Maise, Lina Moody, Elise Moody, Ryder Hellweg and Cora Cusack who took the swim test last Monday.

The regular Friday Fun Day was held on Wednesday of this week. The students hiked around Indiantown Island while observing the wonderful natural surroundings. After their hike, they explored beautiful Spectacle Island.

The Harraseeket Yacht Club Youth Regatta was successful for all the sailors representing SYC. All of our seven 420s ended in the top 20 out of 40 total boats. The results are as follows: Nathan Chatterton and Brian Goldsmith, 20th; Nate Rideout and Jenna Peterson, 16th; Charlie Apolinsky and Abbie Peterson, 12th; Tia Freund and Elsa Bates, 10th; Martha Rand and Sara Morrison, 9th; Bryce Jacobs and Lily Quinn, 8th; and Dane Phippen and Abby Thress, 3rd. We had one outstanding race, the last of the whole regatta, where SYC finished with boats miles ahead of the rest of the fleet with Southport 420s in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

The Intermediate Optis also had an exciting and competitive regatta. Oliver Grant earned 5th place in the Blue Opti fleet, out of a total of 25 boats. He was joined in Blue Fleet by Ryan Peterson in 7th, Sawyer Bates in 15th, and Blake Donnellan in 17th. Of the Opti Red Fleet Sailors, Ella Freund finished 9th, with Conner McWhan in 10th, and Lucy Gauthier in 16th. Luke Donnellan earned 1st place in White Fleet. Congratulations to all of our sailors!

While others competed at Haraseeket, the afternoon Turnabouts had a race day of their own. Alex Goldsmith and Eleanor Marshall finished in 2nd place, racing the boat Mouse, and Meredith Hill and Elsa Polar earned 1st place in Dazzle.

The Advanced Club 420 sailors came back from Harraseeket with another race day on Friday to begin the August series. After four races, Dane Phippen and Abby Thress came in 3rd place, Bryce Jacobs and Lily Quinn finished 2nd, and Charlie Apolinsky and Abbie Peterson earned 1st.

Thank you to Crista Donnellan and Heather Conn for preparing the delicious lunch of burgers, chips, watermelon, and ice cream sandwiches for instructor appreciation day.

SYC is busy with events right up to the end of the summer. Last Thursday was Baked Goods Bingo, with over 45 donations from families. Our last Ice Cream Social of the summer is this Thursday, Aug. 9. Bowls will cost 4 dollars and 1 dollar for a refill. We hope to see you there!

The end of the summer Junior Banquet is unfortunately approaching fast. It will be held at the Southport Town Hall on Friday, Aug. 17 at 6 p.m. Tickets will cost 10 dollars and sales will start this week at the Ice Cream Social.
