Southport Junior Yacht Club Foundation
On July 15 and 16, Laser, 420 and Opti sailors from the SJYCSF traveled to the Junior Olympic Sailing Festival in Boothbay Harbor.
Sailors participated in two days of racing, competing against experienced sailors from all over the state of Maine. The SJYCSF would like to congratulate all Southport sailors who participated in the Junior Olympic Sailing Festival last week. Congratulations to 420 sailors: Jasper Houston and Annie Britton, second place; David Turley and Jen Killian, fifth place; David Wollins and Kendall Brower, 15th place; Nuala Spillane and Megan Roach, 16th place; Emma Jacobs and Kelley Phippen, 18th place; Sally Apolinsky and Tessa Houston, 22nd; and Kiley Roach and Alex Mauer, 29th; Opti sailors: William LaBrecque, first place Green Fleet; Eli Anderson, fifth place Green Fleet; Bryce Jacobs, 11th place Green Fleet; Shannon Pyne, 20th Green Fleet; Andrew Turley, 5th place Championship Fleet; Dane Phippen 7th place Championship Fleet; Blake Erhard 12th place Championship Fleet; Kieran Lorentzen 14th place Championship Fleet; and Max Freund 25th place, Championship Fleet; and laser sailor, Timothy Mauer, 5th place.
We would also like to thank Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club for hosting this event and all of the parent volunteers from both Southport and Boothbay.
Later that week at Southport, 420 sailors participated in their weekly race day. In 420s, Jasper Houston and Annie Britton received first place with David Wollins and Drew Stern in a close second.
Due to heavy wind and ocean rollers the Turnabout sailors did not have a race day last week but look forward to participating in more competitive sailing this week.
Thursday was our July Ice Cream Social hosted by the junior officers and afternoon helpers. Gallons of ice cream and bowls of tasty toppings were enjoyed by people of all ages. Thank you officers and helpers for a terrific event.
On Friday, July 19, the morning class sailors traveled to Powderhorn Island for their weekly Friday Fun day. The sailors enjoyed a day on the beach as they swam, built sand castles and explored the island. It was a fun and relaxing way to finish off another great week at the SJYCSF.
Monday, July 22 marked the start of another exciting week at the SJYCSF! The beginner program kicked off at 9 a.m. with a total of 6 new sailors who all took their swim tests that morning. The SJYCSF would like to welcome Charles Moss, Mia Emy, Riley Gale, Callan Spence, Riley Faulkingham and Charlie Falk. The SJYCSF looks forward to yet another great week of sailing on the Sheepscot.
