Southport Column
A very generous Southport resident has donated much money and also land to a wide variety of philanthropic organizations in the area. A recipient of the land is the Southport United Methodist Church who wants to discuss its use with the community. So on Thursday, Feb. 6, an informational meeting will be held at the Southport United Methodist Church at 6:30 about plans for a parcel of the land (donated by the Winslow Family Trust) to be made available for Affordable Housing lots. A topographical map of the land as well as steps taken to date and next steps underway will be shared. This meeting is open to Southport residents or anyone else in the region who is interested.
Then on Feb. 19, at 5 p.m. at the Southport Town Hall, the selectmen will conduct on hearing on an ordinance change on this land donated to the Southport Methodist Church. The change asked for is from a residential area to a growth area. Look for more information on this meeting elsewhere in this paper. Another calendar note is the annual town meeting on March 3 at 7:30 p.m.
More soup is coming. The community soup potluck or the “Souper Bowl” will take place at the Southport Town Hall this coming Saturday, Feb. 8 from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The lunch is free to all, but you are encouraged to sign up to bring soup, dessert, or just come and bring yourself and a good appetite, and perhaps some containers in case you want to take home some left-over soup, assuming there is any. If you did not get the email, you can sign up at southportislandassociation@gmail.com. If your life is a last minute event, and you did not sign up, come anyway.
The next item for your calendar is another Bean Supper at the Southport Island Store on Feb. 21, scheduled a little later in the day than the last supper, that is from 5 until 7 p.m., perhaps a little better for our tummy and work schedules. The Southport General Store also has a wide variety of Maine raised wool. At the end of February, stay tuned for the exact date, you will be invited to a knitting group, with the day and time set by responses to a survey. If you would like to attend, please note your preferences either when you stop by the store or on line at Annie@SouthportGeneralStore.com.
Did you know we still have a weekly market only instead of on the Boothbay Common? It now takes place at the Footbridge Brewery. Southporter Annie Maurer will be there with her dried lavender for sale as well as others with homemade foods and goods. Time is 3 until 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
Hope you enjoyed the fluffy snow as I did on Saturday. Long after the snow stopped and the sun came out, snow still flew through the air because occasional breezes blew if off the trees and buildings. A beautiful movie all afternoon! And perhaps a few of you reading this are young enough to be out on your skies, skates, and sleds to enjoy the day. I noticed on Sunday about 11:30 a.m. with the temperature at 18 degrees, one person was skating and one person, probably a parent, was watching. Many thanks for Charlie Britton and others who helped shoveling off the snow.
Still time to apply for the job as part-time administrator assistant for the town of Southport. A full job description and applications are available at the Southport Town Office. They will be accepted until the right candidate is found!
