Southport Column: Visting June, Lights Up and more
The “Library Bunch,” folks who gather on Tuesday and Thursday morning at the Southport Memorial Library for conversation and to enjoy Sigid Kopf’s delicious baked goods, packed up the cookies last Thursday and set off for the Zimmerli Pavilion at St. Andrews Village to visit one of their stalwart members, June Elderkin. June, as many of you know, lives on Southport, but recently has been cared for at St. Andrews, with several stays in the hospital. She is now recovering and, we hope, will be home soon. The Library Bunch has missed June’s presence and colorful comments to their discussions, and hopes she will be able to return soon. Until then, I am sure they will continue to carry the conversation to her.
My neighbor, Edee Crosby, is home again after an adventure at several hospitals, rehab, and cared for by her sister and her daughter. She is still living with some pain, but able to be up and moving about. Great for me to have a neighbor back.
By the time this paper appears on the shelves and in our mailboxes I believe Southport will be lit up with seasonal lights and decorations. A group of volunteers gathered at the Southport school on Sunday morning, Nov. 24, to organize and complete the tasks. Many thanks to all.
Robinson’s Wharf is winding down its fall schedule. They have been open Tuesday through Saturday, but next week they will not be open on Thanksgiving and their last day for the season will be Saturday, Nov. 30. Grab some good food while you can.
To full your hearts with more seasonal cheer, come to the Southport Central School concert on Dec. 11, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Southport Town Hall. Always a creative event.
Now for some news from the town office. Nomination papers are available at the Southport Town Hall for (1) a three-year term as Selectman, Assessor, and Overseer of the Poor, (2) School Committee Member for a one-year term, (3) School Committee Member for a three-year term, (4) Boothbay Region Water District Trustee for a three-year term. Another notice from the town office is that dog registrations are now available. All dogs over six months old must be registered by Jan. 1, 2025. Proof of vaccination is required. After Jan. 31, 2025, owners will be charged a $25 fee.
If you are interested in the town budget, note that the Southport town budget meeting is scheduled for Jan. 15 at 6 p.m.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
