Southport Column: A special magazine article, new hours and more

From Gerry Hawes comes a reference to an article in Zest magazine, available now only online. The topic is announced in the title, “The Good Witch of Maine,” which, of course, refers to Margaret Hamilton whose home, still owned by the Meserve family, is off the tip of Newagen Harbor.

With pictures by Michelle Collier and the words written by Susan Perez, the description is written in the first person from the perspective of standing at Town Landing looking across to the famous red farm house. Several great pictures of Margaret Hamilton and one terrific picture of her son, Ham with his mother and young bride, Helen, also decorate the page. You can find and enjoy our island’s bit of fame by Googling creativemainemag.com

From Jen Britton comes this news of our Southport Memorial Library, which will be closed the Saturday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 28). Also, she asked that since the library is limiting visitors to five at a time, please call ahead to reserve a time slot.

Also a reminder that this coming Sunday, Nov. 22, is the last day that the Southport Store is open on Sundays. Those of us who count on getting our Sunday papers there will have to go elsewhere. The hours at the store on Saturday will also be shorter after that date, allowing us access only from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Although more people have stayed on the island due primarily to more danger from infection with the COVID-19 virus in their home cities, several folks have said they will be returning to their winter home after Thanksgiving. Our community has benefited from increased volunteer workers. For example, I know Michael Pollard has been working in the Rotary Barn, where they have had items for sale that normally would have been purchased during the annual auction. Michael said the Rotary has made as much money through this ongoing sale as they did through the auction.

Driving around the island on a lovely Monday morning after high winds during the previous night, I saw only one tree down at the corner of Ebenecook Rood and Hendricks Hill Road. Although the state had a number of power outages, and although our power supply stopped a couple of times for a brief moment, I did not hear of any long term outages on the island.

The sea was wild though, with a strong southwest wind causing seaweed to decorate the road at Hendricks Head Beach. At Town Landing not a boat was moored in Newagen Harbor or tied to the dock, and although the water was up to the top of the wall and perhaps had splashed over a bit, it was not enough to require sweeping. When I felt the dock moving a bit, I scurried back to land. We have enjoyed our lengthy “Indian summer,” but I think it is coming to an end this week.
