Southport Column: Meeting canceled, open hours and more
First, note that the Community Resilience Partnership public meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 13 has been cancelled due to the illness of the convener. Stay tuned here and elsewhere for notice of additional meetings. Sorry for the confusion.
Another point of confusion is when the work will begin to rehab the Southport Bridge. At the moment the bridge tender says he hears that the bridge will close to boat traffic about Oct. 1 so that work can begin on the three piers. Traffic over the bridge will be reduced to one lane, so we may all have to plan extra time for our journeys off and onto the island. The repair work will not disturb the osprey, who have laid their eggs, raised their three young chicks, and are soon ready to fly south.
I was pleased to see work being done to clear out two culverts under our roads, one on the east side as you enter Newagen driving south. A marsh on the west side of the road and an inlet from the ocean on the east side can sometimes overflow onto the Route 238 if the culvert becomes jammed with debris. Also being cleaned was a culvert on the west side of the island just beyond Ebenecook Road and just after Cross Road if you are driving north, where another culvert carries water from the river inlet into a deep pond. Thanks to our road crew for doing the cleaning before we have a flooding problem. Never know what the weather will bring these days.
With Labor Day behind us, fall schedules begin. From Louise Monroe comes this news that Cozy’s Harborside has begun fall hours, which means that they are open Thursday-Sunday from 11:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. and are closed Monday-Wednesday. Robinson’s Wharf will keep the same hours, i.e. open every day from 11:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. at least until the end of September. They could use some more help, so check in if you want or
need to earn some money.
Sorry I missed the Open Mic night at the Southport General Store last week. Did not have it on my calendar, and no email popped up to remind me it was happening. I hear that people who attended had a great time, but that it was a smaller group than Aug. 3.
As you know from the many pictures and articles have been printed in this paper about the opening of school, all seems to be running smoothly. The pictures are also displayed in the Post Office.
As that side of the street gets busy, the Island Store side of the street quiets down. Current store hours are remain the same for now, i.e. Monday through Thursday open from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.; Friday and Saturday open from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Note that at the Gift Barn Jeanne Lally will conduct a workshop on watercolor batik on Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. until noon. You can register for this class and find other classes by going to SouthportGeneralStore.com or email Annie@SouthportGeneralStore.com
Remember to enjoy June Elderkin’s art work at the Southport Memorial Library during this month and next. A good way to spend a rainy afternoon.
The Hendricks Hill Museum will remain open in September on Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Great place to bring guests and to relish our history.
