Southport Central School to set up long-term philanthropy project

Last year, students in grades four through six at Southport Central School learned about philanthropy with help from an anonymous donation to a student-determined organization. While the program did not happen this year due to timing issues, the school is working to formalize this process for the future, Principal Lisa Clarke said.

Instead of an annual donation, the funds would be kept in their own account for the school to use for the project. This will also make it easier for others to contribute as a second donor has already shown interest, according to Clarke.

“The goal is that (students) learn at a young age the importance of doing what we can to support one another,” said Clarke. “Looking beyond just their immediate needs to look at issues on a more global and mature level.”

Students last year were required to research nonprofits and pay attention to the organizations’ goals and what the donation might support. Students  narrowed down the options to St. Andrews Village, Southport Memorial Library and Midcoast Humane, which has an Edgecomb facility. The $1,500 donation went to Midcoast Humane.

Besides teaching students about giving back, Clarke explained the project fits with Maine’s economic and finance studies curriculum requirements. This allows teachers to align discussions of balancing budgets, managing money and planning ahead with the donation. The school plans to revisit the program in the fall semester.

“I'm hoping (this program) becomes sustainable and lives well beyond my time in education,” said Clarke.
