Shoveling for community service
Dear Editor:
While driving through town to get groceries on Sunday, I noticed the men from the water district shoveling out the fire hydrants. It came to me how many hours they spend doing that after each storm.
Our school system has a requirement for each high school student to provide five hours each of their four years to complete community service in order to graduate. Could our students provide the water district crew with help, somehow supervised?
I think if groups of students could be taken to locations by some means and assign them to shovel out 4-5 hydrants each, then the road crew can sign off on hours completed and it would certainly take the strain off the men and to help the students to maintain their community service commitment, not to mention get them outside and doing something productive.
I would be happy to volunteer my time to help with this, if it were accepted by both the school and the town.
