Sewer District trustees to get stipends
Boothbay Harbor selectmen approved a per-meeting stipend for the Boothbay Harbor Sewer District trustees on Dec. 14.
Superintendent Chris Higgins approached the board to request the stipend, which would not exceed $1,000 for each year. The trustees will be compensated based on a per-meeting attendance rate of $41.67.
Boothbay Harbor's municipal board is the only board required to approve the stipend; as while the District provides services in both Boothbay and Southport, both of those towns receive their service on a contracted, pay-per-rate basis.
“As far as I understand it, the Water District trustees are paid, so I think it makes sense,” Chairman Denise Griffin said.
Vice Chairman Bill Hamblen agreed, adding he was surprised they had to be asked.
Higgins explained that it was necessary for any stipend to be approved by the board as it is required by their charter; the town of Boothbay Harbor passed the bonds to create the district. Hamblen moved the request be approved, and Selectman Wendy Wolf seconded the motion. It passed unanimously.
Before this, the Sewer District trustees received no compensation for their service. Current Sewer District Trustees are Jim Stormont, Daryl Kipp and Ted Tedeschi Jr. Trustees serve a three-year term and are elected by the town at general elections and appointed at town meeting.
In other business, Wolf mentioned she had noticed several street lights around town were unlit at night. She reminded the board that this issue was brought to the board last year by Margaret Perritt and needed to be addressed again.
“If you notice street lights out, please let us know at the town,” Wolf said. “That way we can pass on the information to CMP to fix them.” Wolf mentioned that each pole has a number on it and it would be helpful to have that number as well for the report.
Griffin added that CMP’s website has a comments section for such issues as well, which she found in the past had a quick response time.
