Sensible school settlement
Dear Editor:
Today I urge the School Trustees and Plaintiffs to come to the table to discuss, resolve, and end the lawsuit for a win-win resolution.
There are many reasons to seriously consider a settlement. I believe there is one thing that everyone can agree on - the buildings need some repair. It seems, as each month goes by, the Trustees are finding more and more problems that need to be addressed in both buildings.
We are living in unprecedented times. Recent national events are alarming. Building supply prices will likely skyrocket as a result of ongoing inflation, the LA fires and potential upcoming tariffs. The Department of Education is likely to reduce education funding, which will put significant upward pressure on our annual operating budget for years.
It’s also important to know the October school enrollment published by the administration indicates that enrollment has decreased again.
Both sides should appoint representatives to discuss settlement the old-fashioned way, by themselves. Our schools are for the children of Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor and are paid for by taxpayers in our two towns. I have faith that our elected representatives and the plaintiffs have the ability to come to a logical settlement without the assistance of administrators and people who live and vote outside our two towns.
Please join me in urging the Trustees and Plaintiffs to start talking so that repairs can begin!
